A recent report from the US Federal Trade Commission's Consumer Sentinel database revealed that text message-based scams cost US consumers $330m in 2022. The report said this was more than double the amount reported for 2021 and a five-fold increase on the level of reports in 2019. Scammers use text messages to impersonate banks, online retailers and even employers - anything to trick people into clicking on links or disclosing valuable personal information such as Social Security Numbers.
